Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How long has Shelter Me Photography (SMP) been around?
  • SMP was formed in February 2009.  Nanette Martin (SMP, Executive Director) has been photographing adoptable animals since March 2006.
Why was SMP created aren’t shelters already promoting their own animals?
  • SMP was created out of need and Nanette’s social conscience after an animal rescuer told her that her images were making the difference between life and death for the animals she photographed. Most shelters do not have the money or the staff for dedicated photographs, and volunteer photographers often have sporadic availability and may not be trained to photograph animals.  SMP is dedicated to getting animals adopted.
Is SMP a national organization?
  • SMP offers services nationwide.
How many shelters does SMP serve?
  • SMP has photographed 27 shelters in CO, NY, LA, MS, OH, UT and AZ
How many shelters in Colorado does SMP serve?
  • SMP has photographed 10 shelters in CO.
How are the shelters identified/ selected?
  • SMP don't choose shelters, the SMP service policy is to help any organization that asks for assistance.   The SMP service policy is contingent upon available funding to pay for travel and image processing.
How frequently are animals photographed?
  • The frequency of service visits to any shelter by SMP is determined by SMP funding.  For every photographer, SMP needs at least 2 image processors (avg. $100/hr).
How many animals have been photographed?
  • Nearly 5,000 since February 2009.
How many volunteers does SMP have?
  • Volunteer numbers vary from 1-15 depending on availability and community interest.
How much does it cost to deliver the SMP service per animal?
  • Currently, $25.
Is there a cost to the shelter?
  • No.
Does SMP also work with rescues?
  • Absolutely! SMP will help any adoption agency.
What kinds of animals does SMP photograph?
  • Any animal that needs a home.
How can I support SMP?
  • Volunteers are always welcome, but every $25 donation covers the cost of the photography and if the animal is adopted then you have also helped to generate an adoption fee for the shelter.
